Get the Bump Without the Bumpit!

We all like volume, especially those of us with limp, fine or just stubbornly flat hair. So how do we get the nice bump without turning into Snookie or worse having it go limp and separating so it looks like we have a flat tire on the top of our head?

Well, here’s a few tricks you can use to get that bump.

1.    Cleanliness is not next to Godliness.  At least not when it comes to doing hair.  If you hair is super duper oily you will need to wash it before you do it, but otherwise, hair that is like one day dirty will style a little easier than any other hair.

2.  The right tools.  It’s true to get the right volume you need to have the right styling tools and products.  These are:

a.    Backcombing brush/comb (I prefer a rat tail comb or a actual back-comb, brushes are too mess for me)
b.    Hair spray (I prefer Enjoy Hair Care’s Super Hold Hair Spray in the can with the hot pink star.  This is great, is moisture resistant, a thermal protectant, has no sugar in it so it won’t flake in your hair and make you look like you have dry scalp.)
c.    Volumizing Mousse (If you have to wash your hair that day because of oiliness.  My favorite is Enjoy Hair Care’s Volumizing Mousse.  You would apply this to your hair at the roots, work down to the tips while your hair is still a little damp and then dry normally.)
d.    Hair pins or bobby pins. (I prefer bobby pins as they will lock and hold much better.  Do NOT pull a Snookie and use a claw clip to hold your bump.  Please!)

4.    Procedure.

a.     Ok, first always start at the back as this will keep your hair from looking like a Donald Trump Comb-over.
b.    Second, start at the back of the crown with small almost see through sections of hair that are the same width as the back of the crown.
c.     Using the back comb brush/comb comb downwards, backcombing the hair.

5.    Once you have the right amount evenly backcombed, spread that section of hair so it gives a smooth rounded shape over your head.  This will keep your back combing from being too high or narrow.

6.     Spray this first layer and move to the next.

7.     Repeat this process, layering up the hair to achieve a smooth and all day lasting volume.

8.    The main reason backcombing doesn’t work is because people try backcombing too thick of sections, so the very weight of the hair makes them go limp or flat.

9.    Once your hair is backcombed and smoothed over the surface it is time to create the bump.  Using your fingers, take the hair at the top of your head, choosing the hair that rings your crown as this will give you a fuller look and not a narrow and crazy looking bump.

10.    Push the hair forward to achieve the height you want and then use two bobby pins to hold into place.  Be sure you lock the pins by crossing one over the other.

And there you have it!  The bump without the bump it!

Going Green

Everything’s gone green, from fashion to frivolous, we are spending more time and effort on ensuring that we leave a legacy of change for the next generation.

It started back in the 90′s, even earlier if you can picture your uncles, or parents or grandparents even, wearing Berkinstocks and smelling of patchouli oil, I can.

I grew up in San Diego, going to SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo, listening from an early age how these beautiful creatures I was seeing would some day be gone because of something we as a species did.

I do my part I feel, at least I am trying.  I don’t leave the water running while I brush my teeth, I switch off the lights whenever I leave a room, I am personally a vegetarian, I recycle.

But one person, doesn’t change that much….Right?

Wrong, one person choosing to conserve, to be aware makes a huge difference.

I can prove this with the story of Mango.

She was less than three years old and had spent most of her life locked behind bars at the SPCA, with no one to pet her or snuggle with her.  That changed because of one person.

My niece had been wanting a puppy for two years and she had finally talked her mother into getting her one.  Her mom was going to go through a breeder or the newspaper to buy a dog.

My niece wouldn’t hear of it.  She refused to buy a puppy when she knew that so many dogs were lost and abandoned sitting in cages with no home or hope.

So, at her insistence they went to the SPCA in Sacramento, wandered through the kennels that smelled of urine and cleaning chemicals.

The air was loud with barking, whining.  She saw puppies and cute little dogs, all standing at the bars begging to be pet and then she saw, Mango.

Mango just lay there on her little bed, eyes huge and sad, listless, depressed. (Yes dogs can be depressed).

My niece asked to see her.  The sad depressed dog was brought to the little interview room and the moment she saw my niece she became a wiggling mess of whipping tail and lapping tongue.  She wanted nothing else but to be pet.

And because my niece chose to adopt a full grown dog, to help out and make a difference, she changed the life of Mango.

You can now meet Mango from time to time at Image ProvoCateur, but be warned, she loooooooves people and couldn’t be happier with her life.

At Image ProvoCateur it means a lot to us to be able to make a difference.  Not just for our clients day  to day, but for the environment for the years to come.

We aren’t perfect, far from it, but we are making steps towards a better tomorrow.

We use wine glasses to serve refreshments in, so they can be cleaned and recycled and not just tossed away.

We carrying only Enjoy Hair Care products which are 100% cruelty free. Like they say “Tested on Hair Dressers not on Animals”

We only use the Original Brazilian Blow Out  for our clients because it is truly Formaldihyde free

We don’t plan to stop there.  We will continue to find ways to make less of an impact on the environment while wowing the world.  We hope you do the same.

Hot Rollers 102: Sexy Bed Head

Ok, so the other day I taught you how to use Hot Rollers to get volume along your crown.  Now here’s how to get that sexy Victoria Secret Bed head!

Section out your bangs, you don’t want them to get curled back into the rest of your hair.  You can always curl and style them at the end.

Now, section your hair into three parts, the center from just behind your bangs, straight back to the base of your neck and then each side above the ear.

Now, using your hot rollers create a Mohawk down the center of your head.  This is going to give you volume and amazing curls.  Make sure you to the curlers straight up and not just around the crown.  You want a Mohawk otherwise say good bye to volume.

Now, on the sides you are going to want to section out the hair just in front of your ears.  This you are going to want to leave out of the hot rollers unless you want Farah Fawcett hair.  Just sayin’ might not be your goal right now.

Once you have the hair section out, you’re going to do hot rollers at an angle back towards the back of your head.  You don’t want to roll straight down or straight back.  You want a slanted angle on the sides of your head.

Now that all three sections of your hair are rolled, light spray with hair spray, let sit until cool to the touch then you can remove.

If you want to keep the curls and not just have volume, unroll them with a spiraling motion, this will preserve the curl.  If not just pull out and run your fingers through.

If keeping the curl, spiral out until all hot rollers are removed, lightly spritzing each spiral curl with a working hair spray or styling spray.  My recommendation is using Enjoy Hair Care’s Styling Spray.  It will give control without making each curl too stiff.  Once your whole head is unrolled you can flip your head over and do that wonderful head shake.

This will loosen up the curls without making them all drop out.  Flip your head back up, use a curling iron to finish up your bangs and the sectioned off hair around your face.  You can add some light back combing at the back of your crown to help maintain the volume, then spray with a good hair spray.

There you go, hot sexy Victoria Secret Bed Head!

Smooth Shave

Tired of stubble on your legs or underarms?  Not sure how to get it smooth, yet not really willing to go in for the cost and pain of waxing?  Have you tried the chemical solution only to find you get a nasty rash?

Yeah, me too!  And I hate it!

So, after doing some research and some experimenting this is what I have learned.

Multiple directions.  That’s right, that is all it takes.  You will get the smoothest shave ever by using a new razor, good lather and multiple directions.

Most of us just shave our legs in one direction.  Up from the ankle to the knee, etc, or of course there are those who go with the grain.  But one direction isn’t going to cut it because most of the time our hair doesn’t grow in a nice tidy way.

Hair grows in different directions on different parts of our skin.  It can grow up, down, side to side, you name it.  So the best way to get a nice, smooth shave is to go at it from different directions.  This will leave nothing to chance and guarantee you get all of those pesky hairs at one go.

Well, there’s my two cents, so happy shaving out there.

Foundation: Get the Proper Color Match

We’ve all done it.  We’ve stood in the cosmetics department of Rite Aid, Walmart, Target, even MAC and Estee Lauder and searched for that right color of foundation.  We’ve even asked for help and still we’ve gotten home to find it’s just not right.

So frustrating, so annoying and so damn expensive!

What is a girl to do? Well, first off, trying to match ourselves in florescent lighting at a Walmart is never easy.  And second most of us are matching the wrong part of our body.

At makeup counters you tend to test foundation colors on your hand.  Big mistake.  Your hands tend to get more exposure to the sun and to the elements then our faces do.  So they are not the same color as our face, or our neck or our décolletage.  So how on earth would the color that matches the back of your hand match your face?  But it’s not like we were ever taught how to really get the right match, right?

So, then we do the time tested holding it up to our cheek test only to get home and find we have become a floating head.  God I hate floating heads!  Or worse we find that nasty line of demarcation.  That thing will kill the best makeup in a heartbeat.

So the answer?

The best place to match your skin is your décolletage because your face, chest and neck all tend to be a little bit different from each other.  So if you are matching your décolletage and blending your foundation nicely from your hair line, down your neck and feathering to a finish at your collar bone you will end up, most of the time, with perfectly matched foundation.

One more bit of foundation advice:  The color you use in the winter is not going to be the color you use in the summer, so don’t feel bad about having two colors on hand.  You can use the two either by themselves or by combining them to create your own custom color match, not matter what time of the year it is.

Well I hope this helps.  Have fun out there shopping.

Anti Wrinkle Cream: Fact or Fiction

Being over 30 I have started to think that I should be a responsible adult and start taking care of my skin.  Stop sleeping in my makeup, start wearing moisturizer, etc.

I have very oily and sensitive skin…  everything makes me break out so this is a very scary thought for me…  I was picking up some stuff at Walmart and just so happened to walk past the wrinkle cream section.

I picked up this product for $12.47 and decided to give it a whirl, because being the beauty and product whore that I am I recognized some of the main listed, active, ingredients.

I must say I am quite pleased!!!!  This is a lil’ gem in a jar!!  I do not have many bad lines I must say, however my skin has been crazy and unbalanced lately…  being oily as usual yet with dry flakey spots and fine lines.

After only 2 uses I have noticed an improvement in my skin!!!  Yes!!  So happy!!  My fine lines are less, my skin is velvety smooth and I did not break out!!!  It says to use in the am on the instructions, however I used in both am and pm and will continue to do so!!
