4 Portable Beauty Essentials For On-The-Go Pretty from Self.com

Your not the only ones who read beauty blogs :)   Check out what I found on one of our personal favorites, Self.com :

In the interest of extra sleep, some mornings we throw our hair in a bun and rush out the door with no more than a layer of sunscreen on our faces, leaving the real “getting ready” for later. The trade off? A bulging bag full of extra products. Luckily, there’s now a solution at hand.

Sleek, slim and easy to slip in a purse, beauty products housed in wands streamline our cargo and virtually eliminate the risk of spillage, making anytime use quick and discrete. No longer just limited to the basics, there’s a growing crop of beauty wands that tackle everything from tooth whitening to smoothing strands. Here are four of our favorites and what makes them so effective.

Go Smile On-The-Go Teeth Whitening Pen: As much as we love our trusted Crest White Strips, the speech-inhibiting stain sappers are best left at home. Go Smile’s ingenious whitening pen features a soft brush head that coats teeth with a thin undetectable film. There’s no food or drink for 20 minutes, but speaking and smiling aren’t a problem.

Full Repair Touch Up Flyaway Tamer: Smooth frizz, breakage and flyaway tresses with a reparative dose of Inca Inchi oil. Unlike most hair serums that leave our fingertips greasy, the mascara-style applicator makes for easy, no-mess touchups.

Peter Thomas Roth Anti-Aging Instant Mineral SPF 45: Multi-tasking beauty at its best, this portable mineral powder is made with anti-aging peptides and backed by SPF45 protection. Housed in a retractable brush, the mattifying blend means topping up on sun-protection during the day (always a smart idea) doesn’t have to add shine.

Josie Maran Rapid Eye Makeup Pen: This sleek, dual-ended color pen streamlines your beauty bag by packing four Argan Oil infused eye makeup essentials into one pretty magical wand. On one end, there’s a long-wearing gel eyeliner and on the other, a mini applicator. The added bonus: The middle holds a shimmer shadow with a sponge tip applicator.

The Best Beauty Trends Borrowed from Old Hollywood

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 12:43 PM
  |  posted by Beauty News

Any woman can feel more confident with a good ruby-red lip, flirty lashes or a sexy cat-eye. These classic trends, made famous by beauties of old Hollywood, are still some of our favorites. Here are some leading ladies with signature looksthat left a lasting impression. Learn how to get them yourself!

Sophia Loren’s Cat Eye:  Sophia’s winged cat-eye was bold and dramatic. Liquid liner can be daunting for some, but it’s easier to pull of than you think.
Tip: Apply a nude/beige shadow over your lids. Take an eyeliner pencil and create tiny dots along your upper lashes to just before where your brow ends. Connect the dots with a black liquid liner and slightly flick up the end for a winged effect. Then, line the outer edges of your bottom lids. Finish with two coats of mascara, teasing up the outer edges of your lashes.
Marilyn Monroe’s Ruby-Red Pout: When I think of a classic red lip, I think of Marilyn. She challenged women for decades after to proudly embrace their femininity with this bold, attention-grabbing shade.
Tip: There’s a red for everyone. If you have fair skin, try a coral red. For medium skin tones, try something in a true red or a hint of pink/berry. If you have dark skin, try a warm burgundy or brick shade.
Audrey Hepburn’s Defined Brows: Audrey’s thick, full brows were a staple part of her youthful, pixie look (thicker brows can make you look younger!). Her’s were very straight with a hint of an arch.
Tip:  If you’re not blessed with a bushy brow to work with, try a kit like Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Express. Fill in sparse areas with the wax to make your brow look fuller and then define them with the setting powder in a shade slightly darker than your natural brow.
Veronica Lake’s Glamourous Waves: Long, classic waves have been a staple on the red carpet for some time now. You don’t need a personal stylist to channel your inner Vernoica Lake.
Tip: Use a straightening iron and clamp a 1″ – 1 1/2″ section of hair starting just above your ear. Gently bring the iron downward, pulling hair through while turning it (kind of like a ribbon). Alternate the direction that your rotate the iron in. Once you finish, apply a tiny bit of smoothing lotion like John Frieda Root Awakening Strength Restoring Smoothing Lotion and a mist of light hold hairspray.

Sleep: The Best Beauty Secret

I think we tend to down play the importance of a good night’s sleep.  At least until we stop sleeping!

It’s true, in our lives sleep becomes a nuisance or a luxury.  We’ve got jobs, school or both.  We have kids and careers and our own personal goals.  Sleep is even shoved out of the way so we can catch up on our favorite TV shows.  Personally, having to sleep feels like a complete waste of time.  I could be using that time to work, or write, or a million other useful things.  At least it felt that way to me until I started spending long nights in a hospital waiting room with no bed in sight!

Not only does sleep feel great after a long and busy day, it’s the time in which are body repairs all the damage stress and life deals out on us.  It is during sleep that our body heals and part of that is smoothing out all those fine lines that have us disturbed when we look into the mirror and it keeps those dark circles far, far away.

Sleep is what keeps us mentally and emotionally grounded.  During sleep we dream, working out the issues and worries of the day, refreshing us so we can face life fresh and raring to go.  It also keeps us looking a helluva lot younger!

Seriously, if all you have to do is get a good night’s rest to knock a few years off your face why would you argue?  It’s a scientifically proven fact that while the body sleeps it regenerates cells and tissue.  It’s something we’ve noticed in ourselves and others through the years.  Forget the science; you know it’s true when you see yourself after a sleepless night.  You look about as old as your body feels.  A well rested face is a happy face.  Fine lines sometimes are simply a matter of fatigue or dehydration.  So drink some water, get some rest and perhaps you can avoid that little trip to the plastic surgeon.

Life is busy and we tend to focus on everything else, on everyone else but ourselves.  It’s time to change that.  Be kind to yourself and add rest to your regimen of beauty needs.  Every body works on a different level, some require no more than five hours a night to be fully rested, others, like myself, need a good eight hours to feel human again.  If your body isn’t getting those solid hours of sleep, either because you’re going to bed too late or because you’re tossing and turning, your body builds a sleep deficit.  No need to stress about that, it’s like a bank account.  You don’t get enough sleep and your account gets over drafted.  The good part of this?  You can always pay back the bank!

So if during the week you can’t get the sleep your body and beauty crave, snuggle in on the weekend and catch up on your zzzz’s!

Heat Styling: How Hot is Too Hot? by Self.com

You know how I love Self.com!  They have some of the best beauty and health tips out there.  I am a very loyal reader and I just love to share what I’ve read.  So here’s the latest article I found useful on Self.com! – Arrvada

The dial on your flatiron that goes up to scorching temps and the heat setting on your dryer can leave you wondering; how hot is too how when it comes to your hair tools? We’ll talk straighteners, curling irons and dryers and tell you how to play it safe with your heated tools. Straighteners We love the sleek look our flatirons create, but it comes at a price: The hot tongs can burn the hair inside and out. If you’re not confident with the clamp, set your iron below 300 degrees–you’re more likely to take several passes over the hair, which makes it brittle, says Jen Borysewicz, senior stylist at Antonio Prieto Salon in NYC. If you know exactly what you’re doing, one pass at 400 degrees won’t scorch strands.

Tip: Always, always, always use a heat protectant on damp locks, even if you wash your hair at night and straighten it in the morning. Our readers love Paul Mitchell Hot Off The Press Thermal Protection Spray, $15. Curling iron A curling iron works like a straightener but creates the opposite effect, so you can treat it the same way. Stick to temps below 300 degrees if you’re a not-so-savvy spiral stylist, Borysewicz advises.

Tip: Before curling, prep hair with a lightweight mousse that protects against heat, improves texture and mends damage. Your curls will stay in place, so you won’t feel the urge to retouch them again and again. Shu Uemura Art of Hair Kaze Wave Sensual Curl Texturizing Foam, $38, does it all. Hair dryers The timeless staple of the hair styling world, the dryer causes much more damage than we’d like to believe. Inferno temps can make water inside the hair boil, causing the outer coating to bubble up. Keep the heat setting on medium-high, Borysewicz says, and opt for an ionic dryer to protect and settle strands.

Tip: “You never want wet hair to fall on top of dry hair,” Borysewicz says. Section three inches of hair all the way around your hairline (think a full circle), and put the rest of your tresses up. Stop when the hair is dry–it burns once the water evaporates–and move on to the next layer. –By Marissa Gainsburg

5 Easy Ways to Style Your Hair

You ever wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and think, ‘I wish I could do something different with my hair’.  Then because you’re on a time restraint, kids, job, school, you do your hair like you’ve done every morning this year!  Yes, we all do that.  Don’t go to the extreme like I did and shave off the sides of your head to give yourself a Mohawk.  Instead I offer you these five fun , fashionable and easy hair styles.

You will need the following tools:

Rat Tail Comb – You can get these at Walmart or Any Beauty Supply Store. I recommend Sally’s Beauty Supply as they have the best price.

Bobbie Pins – Again, Walmart or Beauty Supply Stores, but they have the best price at Saloncentrics.  The ones in the pink box are best , they don’t bend or twist funny on you.

Hair Ties – Get the small clear plastic kind.  You can find them at Walmart for real cheap or at Sally’s

Hair Spray – My Ultimate FAVORITE is Got 2b Glued by Schwarzkopf.  This stuff is amazing and holds all day!!!  You can find it at Walmart for the Best Price at around $6.99 a can.  Only downside is on dark hair it can sometimes flake, however you can counter this by spritzing the hair with a little shine spray.

If however you don’t want to risk flaking I recommend Enjoy Hair Care’s Super Hold Hair Spray. It doesn’t have any sugar in it which is what causes flaking.  This however can only be found in California at select salons.  You might be able to order it online, it’s worth a look.  The only drawback to Enjoy is it is at least $10 more expensive than Got 2b Glued.

Shine Spray – Best in the business is the Shine Spray by Enjoy Hair Care.  But you can find some decent ones at local beauty supply stores.

A Hat – Your choice

Now, to get  down to the nitty-gritty:

The Bump.  Ok, I know this invokes an immediate visualization of Snooki!  However, this is a very easy and very attractive style if done right.  So get Snooki out of your mind and let me tell you how it’s done.

First, all hair styles are done best if your hair is not super clean.  So day old hair is best, though if you have super fine/oily hair you can wash it and just dirty it up with some hair spray or texture spray.  Backcomb your hair from just above the ears along the crown of your head.  D0 small layers as you work forward.  Be sure to spread the hair over the crown of your head, making a smoother, rounder bump.  Work forward to just behind where your bangs will start.  Comb smooth the last two layers so that none of the backcombing shows through your hair making it look like a bird built a nest on your head.  Once you have your backcombing finished, take small sections from the sides of your head, near the temple and pull them back loosely.  Take small sections or your bump is going to look chunky and flat.  At the back of your head push them up against your backcombing to the desired height, pin into place with the bobbie pins. Spray liberally.

Side Pony – This look can be worn sleek or messy, you can dress it up with braids, or even wear it with a headband.  First you can backcomb along your crown if you want a little volume, then comb (for sleek look) or gather (for more messy or casual look) all your hair towards the side of your head.  Take a half inch strand of hair from the nape of your neck.  Wrap this around the rest of the hair and create a pony tail with it.  Use two bobbie pins crossed over each other on the underside of the tail to hold the hair wrap in place.  Finish out your bangs and tail with some shine spray for a smoother, sleeker look or just with hair spray for a normal look.

Messy Side Chignon – Same instructions as the side pony, except you could use a clear plastic hair tie instead of using the hair to wrap it.  I suggest the tie, as this will make a more flexible tail to work with.  Once secured pull up strands of hair, thick ones for a messy chignon or slender ones for a sleeker more formal look, and use the bobbie pins to pin them into a knot behind your ear.  You can be as creative as you want and just plug the strands in randomly to create a fast, easy and beautiful do.

Messy Pony Tail – This look is best done with a good amount of backcombing so you can have some nice volume, otherwise it looks like a boring ol’ pony tail like you used to wear when you were ten.  Back comb, then with your fingers scoop everything back into a mid-height tail.  Tie it with the clear plastic hair tie and schelack- I mean, spray.

Double Braid/Hat Combo – Not everyone can pull this one off without looking like the Swiss Miss Girl.    But for those who can it’s a great and fast way to style your hair.  Use your fingers to comb the hair and part down the center of your head.  It’s ok if it’s not perfect, this is a more casual, messy look, but you can always do it sleeker, though too clean and you look like the St Pauli Girl.  Another way to avoid that cutesy contrived look is to not tie the hair in pigtails on either side of your head and then braid.  Instead braid the sides to secure them and then just tie them off at the end.  This gives it a more casual and less polished look.  Last step toss on your hat.  Beanies work as well.

And for those of you who can NOT wear the double braid cause you think you look like Pippi Longstockings, you can achieve the same casual look by scooping all your hair to one side, braiding it and throwing on your hat!

So there you have it!  I few quick and easy ways to spice up your do.

Getting a Summer Tan

We’ve had one heck of a weird summer!  We’ve got hot weather where is should be cold.  We’ve got cold weather when it should be hot.  We’ve got rain instead of shine and its wreaking havoc on our summer tanning!

Well, personally I can’t tan to save my life, however, for those of you who can hold a lovely golden tan, this can be very discouraging.  The sun hasn’t been out in a steady fashion, so you’re pale and beginning to consider if you should go Goth or not.  Well, before you decide something that drastic, here are a few tips that may brighten up your day.

Tanning Beds.  Ok, if your budget doesn’t allow, or you’re afraid of developing wrinkles, this may not be the option for you, but it’s still a good and valid choice over pale skin.  For one it helps your body produce Vitamin D, which is a great mood enhancer and something your body craves.  However!  This is important; you do not need to expose your body to long periods in a Tanning Bed.  It’s the same as lying out in the sun and you risk more than just getting sunburned.  You do not need to risk a melanoma just to get a little color.  So fifteen minutes a few times a week will boost your Vitamin D levels and get a little golden going.

Fake Tanner.  So, if you don’t want to risk any form of skin damage that you might encounter with the tanning bed, you can always go the way of the fake tanner.  Now I know some of you are screaming NO!  I understand you have grave misgivings about using anything that comes in a squeeze bottle and boasts an even golden tan.  You’ve seen or experienced all the orange, streaky skin you care to.  Well, I have a product that is amazing and if you apply it properly you will not have to worry about either of those.  It’s called Vichy Self-Tanning Cream.  This stuff is amazing!  Made in France you can find it online at Amazon and other places, but I don’t think you’ll be able to find it at your local Rite Aid.  This stuff gives you an amazing streak free tan with none of that annoying orange shade you so fear.  It’s a healthy and beautiful way to get a summer sun kissed look.

Spray Tanning.  This third option can be a very nice, if somewhat pricey choice.  In average a spray tan can be anywhere from $25 to $50 a go.  Good news is it will last a good week.  Sometimes longer if you happen to have dry skin.  There is one disclaimer I will say though.  Do not go to the tanning booths.  These sprays on tans are not even and leave strange little places that are as white as you don’t want to be.  So, find yourself a personal custom spray tanner.  These will give you a smooth, even and beautiful tan.  You might even be able to get them to do a little creative contouring!

So, hopefully these tips have helped you on your quest for a beautiful beachy tan.

Emma Stone is Obsessed with Liquid Liner—And So Are We! – From Cosmopolitan.com

Cosmo always has such cool tips and interesting articles.  I thought this would be a fun one to share!
July 20, 2011 at 1:30PM By Dawn Davis | 1 comment

Emma Stone is clearly a liquid eyeliner addict—and we love her for it! While so many celebs are makeup chameleons, she sticks with her go-to look—but mixes up her other makeup. Case in point: these three looks, which range from dramatic to subdued but all feature her signature liner.

To DIY this gorge makeup, start with a really great liner. We like L’Oréal Lineur Intense Felt Tip Liner from the drugstore—it’s easy to control and the effect is ultra-dark and inky. Once you’ve got the liner down, try playing with the rest of your makeup just like Emma: At last night’s Crazy, Stupid, Love premiere, she went full-on glam with berry-stained lips and a thicker-than-usual swipe (left). Her look at the MTV Awards (center) was more subtle: She wore nude lipstick, her skin was warm and bronzy and the liner wasn’t that intense. For a fun, playful variation back in May, she paired a crisp line with hot-pink lips at the Met Gala.

Are you obsessed with liquid liner?

VIP-CAT loves liquid liner.  It is a great way to get a sharp, clean line that really plays up the Old Hollywood Glam Look.  Favorite Brands would be MAC and believe it or not Wet ‘N Wilds H2O Waterproof Black Liner.  These both have a felt tip with helps you create a smooth flawless line.
What’s your favorite Liquid Liner?  Share on our Facebook!

Marbelized Nails: How to Tip from Cosmopolitan.com

One of the highlights of my Atlantic City trip was Gillian, our bikini-clad cocktail waitress by the pool at the Chelsea Hotel. Not only was she the nicest person in AC, she also had the coolest nails I’ve ever seen: this purple and silver “water-marbelized” mani.

Of course I cornered her to get all the info, and she was happy to spill. Her sister had done her nails and learned the technique watching YouTube videos! Gillian said it was pretty simple to do, but it took a while—and that she’d been receiving non-stop complements on her tips ever since.

So this morning I watched a half a dozen of these videos and marbelized a nail while sitting at my desk. (Disclaimer: Don’t try this at work unless it’s actually for your job—I know, I know, I’m insanely lucky—and you make sure none of your desk-neighbors mind the nail-polish smell.) Basically, all you have to do is pour a few drops of different nail polish colors into water, swirl them into a marble pattern with a toothpick (I used a straw), and then dip in your nail (with Scotch tape on your finger so the paint doesn’t stick to your skin). Then, twirl the toothpick to remove the leftover polish from the water. Repeat the process on each nail. The finished look is so, so cool and almost easier to DIY than a regular mani.

We love Cosmo Magazine!  They have some of the best beauty tips!  Hope you find this as helpful as I did.

Look Hot This Weekend: Wear a Lace Blindfold by Cosmopolitan.com

The couture shows have been going on in Paris this week, and leave it to Chanel to completely blow us away with a majorly gorgeous look. “I wanted to create an eye that would read through a veil,” explained Peter Philips, Creative Director of Chanel Makeup. He used Illusion d’Ombre in Mirifique, an awesome gel eyeshadow in a dark, sparkly hue and smudged it all around the eyes. But the thing that really got us was the “veil” (read: lace blindfold)—can you think of anything sexier?

While you may not want to rock a lace face on your next date, it would be pretty hot to pull it out later in the evening. And a smoldering, smoky eye like this one is both restaurant and bedroom approved.

Is this a look you want to try?

More Sexy Weekend Looks

Cosmo Certainly has a handle on what’s hot and what’s not.  Makes you wonder how much Chanel is charging for this little bit of lace.  Maybe a trip to Joann’s is in store for all of us?
What do you think?  You ready to rock a blindfold?
